For accountants

R&D claims for your clients, with your relationship left alone.

Refer a client or white-label our work. Every claim is reviewed and signed off by a Chartered Tax Adviser, we defend enquiries on claims prepared by others, and your client stays your client. We reply the same working day.

Two ways to work

Choose the arrangement that suits your practice.

Refer a client

You introduce the client and we take it from there. We speak to the client, prepare and file the claim, and keep you copied in throughout.

White-label

We work behind you and you present the claim as part of your own service. We prepare the technical report and the claim, and you stay the client's voice.

[OMAR: confirm white-label terms and who is named as agent]

Referral fees, stated plainly

We always disclose referral fees to the client.

We pay referral fees to accountants who introduce clients, and we always disclose them to the client.

We think accountants and clients are both entitled to know how a referral works, so it is written into the arrangement from the start. We do not hide it, and we would not want to work with a firm that did.

Your client stays your client

We only do R&D tax work.

We do not prepare accounts and we do not audit. We only do R&D tax work, so there is nothing for us to pitch to your client beyond the claim you referred.

  • You choose who speaks to the client and who is copied in.
  • We confirm the reporting line in writing before work starts.
  • Every claim is reviewed and signed off by a Chartered Tax Adviser.
  • We reply the same working day.

Transparent with HMRC

Every agent is named, so white-label is open to HMRC.

HMRC requires every agent who advised on a claim, analysed the costs, wrote the technical report or filed the return to be named on both the claim notification and the additional information form. White-label does not change that. It simply means the client sees one familiar face.

  • We are named wherever the rules require it.
  • You can see exactly how every figure was built.
  • The company remains responsible for its return, and its senior internal contact is named on the form.

Enquiry support for your clients

We defend claims, including those prepared by others.

HMRC is checking more R&D claims than it used to. We also defend R&D enquiries on claims prepared by others, so a client who comes to you with an HMRC letter can be passed to us the same day.

  • We triage the letter the same working day.
  • We review the claim and the evidence before anything is sent.
  • We prepare the client's competent professionals and attend any HMRC meeting.
  • You are kept informed at each step.

R&D briefing for accountants

A practical session for your team.

We run a short briefing for practices on what qualifies, which costs count, how the notification and additional information form rules work, and what HMRC is checking. It helps your team spot claims, and spot risk, before a client asks.

Ask for a briefing when you get in touch, or book a call.

Refer a client

Tell us about your client.

Two minutes. Please confirm the client is happy to be contacted. We reply the same working day.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How do you work with accountancy practices?

In two ways: you can refer a client to us, or you can white-label our work under your own name. In both, the client stays your client and you remain their adviser on everything else. We only do R&D tax work, we reply the same working day, and every claim is reviewed and signed off by a Chartered Tax Adviser.

What is the difference between referral and white-label?

With a referral, we speak to your client, prepare the claim and keep you informed, and you stay copied in throughout. With white-label, we work behind you and you present the claim as part of your own service. Either way, every agent involved must be named to HMRC, so the arrangement is transparent.

Will you contact our client directly?

Only in the way you agree. On a referral we speak to the client, with you copied in. On a white-label arrangement we work through you, or alongside you on calls you join. We do not contact your client about anything outside the R&D claim you referred. We will not go around you.

Will you take on our client's other work?

No. We only do R&D tax work. We do not prepare accounts and we do not audit, so there is nothing for us to pitch for. Your client stays your client, and we work around the relationship you already have. That is deliberate: it keeps the relationship simple, and means you can introduce clients to us without worrying about what comes next.

Do you pay referral fees?

Yes. We pay referral fees to accountants who introduce clients, and we always disclose them to the client. We think that is the only honest way to do it, and it protects both of you. We explain the arrangement when we set up the referral and confirm it in writing.

Who is named as agent on the claim notification and the AIF?

Every agent who advised on the claim, analysed the costs, wrote the technical report or filed the return has to be named, on both the claim notification and the additional information form. That includes us. How the naming works for each arrangement is confirmed with you before work starts. Being open about this protects you and your client.

Who files the CT600?

It depends on the arrangement, and we agree it with you at the start. In many cases your practice files the company tax return, and we supply the R&D computations, the technical report and the additional information form. Where we submit the claim with the return ourselves, we do so as a named agent.

How do you protect our client relationship?

By limiting what we do and being open about it. We only do R&D tax work, we copy you into correspondence on a referral, and we agree in advance who speaks to whom. We do not pitch other services to the client, and any referral fee is disclosed to them.

Can you support our clients under an HMRC enquiry?

Yes. We defend R&D enquiries for accountants' clients, including claims that were prepared by others. We triage the HMRC letter the same working day, review the claim and evidence, handle the written responses and prepare the client's competent professionals for any meeting. You are kept informed throughout. Clients with a letter in hand can be passed to us the same day.

Do you train our staff on R&D?

We offer an R&D briefing for accountants covering what qualifies, which costs count, the notification and additional information form rules and how HMRC is checking claims. It is practical rather than academic, and designed to help your team spot claims and risks. Ask us about a session for your partners or your wider team.

How do you share claim working papers?

We share the technical report, the cost workings and the claim summary with you as the claim is prepared, so you can see how every figure was built. Your practice, and the client, are entitled to the working papers that support the claim, and we keep them organised in case of an enquiry.

What happens if a claim we referred is queried by HMRC?

We handle it. A referred claim that HMRC queries is dealt with as an enquiry: we triage the letter the same working day and prepare the response. The record to date is that no R&D claim we have prepared has been rejected or reduced after an HMRC enquiry. Zero Risk claims include enquiry defence at no extra cost.

Are you regulated?

ASWATAX LTD is registered with the Chartered Institute of Taxation as Chartered Tax Advisers and for the purposes of anti-money laundering legislation. HMRC does not itself regulate R&D agents, but it can refuse to deal with them, so standards matter. Every claim is reviewed and signed off by a Chartered Tax Adviser.

How do you handle anti-money laundering checks on referred clients?

We carry out our own checks on every client before we start, as we are registered for anti-money laundering purposes. We tell you what we will need from the client so it is not a surprise to them. Please do not assume your own checks cover ours. This is a normal step for any firm in our position.

Can you review a claim our team prepared?

Yes. A second-opinion review is a sensible check before a claim is filed. We review the projects against the Government's guidelines, test the costs and the records, and tell you plainly where the claim is strong and where it needs work. You decide what to change, and the claim remains yours.

What client information do you need to get started?

For the first conversation, very little: the company name, what it does, a rough idea of annual R&D spend and the period of account. After that we need the company's records of R&D activity and costs, which we request in a short, ordered list so the client is not overwhelmed.

How quickly can you respond to a client query?

We reply the same working day. For an HMRC letter, we triage the case the same working day and tell you the reply date and what it means. If you tell us the matter is urgent, say so in your message and we will treat it as such. This applies equally to white-label work.

Do you send updates to us or to the client?

To whoever you prefer. On a referral, we update the client and copy you. On a white-label arrangement we update you, and you decide what is passed on. We confirm the reporting line in writing at the start so there is no confusion later. We never leave you guessing about progress.

How does a practice start working with you?

Use the Refer a client form below or book a call. Tell us a little about your practice and the client, and we will explain how the two models work, agree how reporting will run and confirm the referral fee arrangement in writing. There is no obligation, and we reply the same working day.

Do you take referrals for clients who already have an adviser's claim in progress?

Yes, in two situations. One is a second-opinion review before filing, the other is an open HMRC enquiry on a claim prepared by someone else. We also defend R&D enquiries on claims prepared by others, so a client whose previous adviser has gone quiet is a common referral. Tell us the stage the claim has reached when you refer.

Prefer to talk first?

Book a call and we will explain the two models and answer your questions. We reply the same working day.
